About Surah Al-Kahf

Surah Al-Kahf (The Cave) is the 18th surah of the Quran. It was revealed in Makkah and contains 110 verses. It is named after the People of the Cave (Ashab al-Kahf), the young believers who fled with their faith and were made to sleep for many years. The surah begins:

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَنزَلَ عَلَىٰ عَبْدِهِ الْكِتَابَ وَلَمْ يَجْعَل لَّهُ عِوَجًا

"All praise is for Allah, Who sent down the Book upon His servant and has not made therein any deviance."

Benefits of Surah Al-Kahf

1. Protection from the Dajjal (Antichrist)

Abu ad-Darda (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever memorizes the first ten verses of Surah Al-Kahf will be protected from the Dajjal." In another narration of the same hadith: "...the last ten verses of Surah Al-Kahf."

2. A light between the two Fridays

Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever reads Surah Al-Kahf on the day of Friday, a light will shine for him between the two Fridays."

— Al-Mustadrak of Al-Hakim (2/399); Al-Bayhaqi (3/249) — Ibn Hajar said in Takhrij al-Adhkar that this is a hasan hadith and the strongest report narrated about reading Surah Al-Kahf; Shaykh al-Albani classed it as sahih in Sahih al-Jami' 6470.

3. A light reaching the Ancient House (the Ka'bah)

Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: "Whoever reads Surah Al-Kahf on the night of Friday, a light will shine for him between him and the Ancient House (the Ka'bah)."

The Four Stories of Surah Al-Kahf

The surah itself relates four well-known accounts, all found in its own verses:

  • The People of the Cave (verses 9–26) — the young men who fled to the cave to protect their faith, and were made to sleep for three hundred years and nine more.
  • The owner of the two gardens (verses 32–44) — the man who was proud of his wealth and gardens, and lost them.
  • Musa and Al-Khidr (verses 60–82) — Musa's journey to learn from the servant of Allah who had been given knowledge.
  • Dhul-Qarnayn (verses 83–98) — the righteous ruler who travelled to the east and the west and built the barrier against Ya'juj and Ma'juj (Gog and Magog).

When Should Surah Al-Kahf Be Read?

The narrations mention both the day of Friday and the night of Friday. Scholars explain that the time for reading it extends from sunset on Thursday (when the night of Jumu'ah begins) until sunset on Friday. Reading the whole surah is best; whoever cannot manage the whole surah should at least hold fast to its first ten verses, whose memorisation carries the promise of protection from the Dajjal (Sahih Muslim 809).

سورۃ الکہف قرآن کی 18ویں سورۃ ہے۔ یہ مکہ مکرمہ میں نازل ہوئی اور اس میں 110 آیات ہیں۔ اس کا نام اصحاب کہف (غار والوں) کے نام پر ہے — وہ نوجوان ایمان والے جو اپنا ایمان بچا کر نکلے اور کئی سال سوتے رہے۔ سورۃ کا آغاز ان الفاظ سے ہوتا ہے:

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَنزَلَ عَلَىٰ عَبْدِهِ الْكِتَابَ وَلَمْ يَجْعَل لَّهُ عِوَجًا

"تمام تعریفیں اللہ کے لیے ہیں جس نے اپنے بندے پر کتاب نازل کی اور اس میں کوئی ٹیڑھ نہیں رکھی۔"

سورۃ الکہف کے فائدے

1. دجال کے فتنے سے حفاظت

حضرت ابو درداء رضی اللہ عنہ سے روایت ہے کہ نبی ﷺ نے فرمایا: "جس نے سورۃ الکہف کی پہلی دس آیات یاد کر لیں، وہ دجال سے محفوظ رہے گا۔" اسی حدیث کی ایک اور روایت میں ہے: "...سورۃ الکہف کی آخری دس آیات۔"

2. دو جمعوں کے درمیان نور

حضرت ابو سعید خدری رضی اللہ عنہ سے روایت ہے کہ نبی ﷺ نے فرمایا: "جو شخص جمعے کے دن سورۃ الکہف پڑھے، اس کے لیے دو جمعوں کے درمیان نور روشن رہے گا۔"

— مستدرک حاکم (2/399)؛ بیہقی (3/249) — ابن حجر نے تخریج الاذکار میں اسے حسن کہا اور فرمایا کہ سورۃ الکہف پڑھنے کے بارے میں یہ سب سے مضبوط روایت ہے؛ شیخ البانی نے اسے صحیح الجامع 6470 میں صحیح قرار دیا۔

3. بیت العتیق (کعبہ) تک پہنچنے والا نور

حضرت ابو سعید خدری رضی اللہ عنہ سے روایت ہے: "جو شخص جمعے کی رات سورۃ الکہف پڑھے، اس کے اور بیت العتیق (کعبہ) کے درمیان نور روشن ہو جائے گا۔"

— سنن دارمی 3407 — شیخ البانی نے اسے صحیح الجامع 6471 میں صحیح قرار دیا۔

سورۃ الکہف کی چار داستانیں

اس سورۃ میں چار مشہور واقعات بیان ہوئے ہیں، جو سب اس کی اپنی آیات میں موجود ہیں:

  • اصحاب کہف (آیات 9–26) — وہ نوجوان جو اپنا ایمان بچانے کے لیے غار کی طرف نکلے، اور تین سو سال اور مزید نو سال سوتے رہے۔
  • دو باغوں والا شخص (آیات 32–44) — وہ آدمی جو اپنے مال اور باغات پر فخر کرتا تھا، اور وہ سب اس سے جاتا رہا۔
  • موسیٰ اور خضر علیہما السلام (آیات 60–82) — حضرت موسیٰ علیہ السلام کا اللہ کے اس بندے سے علم سیکھنے کا سفر جسے خاص علم عطا کیا گیا تھا۔
  • ذوالقرنین (آیات 83–98) — وہ نیک بادشاہ جس نے مشرق و مغرب کے سفر کیے اور یاجوج و ماجوج کے آگے دیوار بنائی۔

سورۃ الکہف کب پڑھیں؟

روایات میں جمعے کے دن اور جمعے کی رات دونوں کا ذکر ہے۔ علماء فرماتے ہیں کہ اس کے پڑھنے کا وقت جمعرات کے غروب آفتاب (جب جمعے کی رات شروع ہوتی ہے) سے جمعے کے غروب آفتاب تک ہے۔ پوری سورۃ پڑھنا بہتر ہے؛ اور جو پوری نہ پڑھ سکے وہ کم از کم اس کی پہلی دس آیات ضرور یاد کرے، جن کے حفظ پر دجال سے حفاظت کا وعدہ ہے (صحیح مسلم 809)۔
