Tahajjud Namaz Ka Tarika: The Night Prayer — Complete Guide
Tahajjud is the voluntary night prayer — one of the most beloved acts of worship in Islam. The Prophet ﷺ never abandoned it. This guide covers everything: what it is, its virtues, how to pray it, and practical tips.
What is Tahajjud?
Tahajjud (تہجد) means "to stay awake at night." It is a voluntary (nafl) prayer performed after Isha and before Fajr, preferably in the last third of the night after sleeping.
Quran: "And from [part of] the night, pray with it [the Quran] as additional [worship] for you; it is expected that your Lord will resurrect you to a praised station." (Quran 17:79 — Surah Al-Isra)
Urdu: "اور رات کے کچھ حصے میں تہجد پڑھا کرو، یہ تمہارے لیے اضافی عبادت ہے، امید ہے کہ تمہارا رب تمہیں مقام محمود پر پہنچائے گا۔"
Virtues of Tahajjud
The Prophet ﷺ said: "The best prayer after the obligatory prayers is the night prayer." (Sahih Muslim 1163)
He ﷺ also said: "Our Lord descends every night to the lowest heaven when one-third of the night remains and says: 'Who will call upon Me, that I may answer him? Who will ask of Me, that I may give him? Who will seek My forgiveness, that I may forgive him?'" (Sahih al-Bukhari 1145, Sahih Muslim 758)
When to Pray Tahajjud
- Time: After Isha prayer until Fajr begins
- Best time: Last third of the night (calculate: divide night into 3 parts)
- Condition: Preferably after sleeping (though not obligatory)
How Many Rakats?
The Prophet ﷺ prayed 11 rakats (8 tahajjud + 3 witr). (Sahih al-Bukhari 1147)
Minimum: 2 rakats. You can pray 2, 4, 6, 8, or more in sets of 2.
Step-by-Step Method
- Make wudu
- Make niyyah (intention) for Tahajjud
- Pray 2 rakats at a time (like Fajr sunnah)
- Recite Quran slowly with reflection — the Prophet ﷺ would recite long passages
- Make long sujood with dua
- After completing, pray Witr (3 rakats)
- Make abundant dua — this is the time of acceptance!
What to Recite
There is no fixed surah. The Prophet ﷺ recited long portions. You can recite:
- Any surahs you know
- Surah Al-Muzzammil (73) — revealed about night prayer
- Repeat and reflect on the meanings
Practical Tips for Beginners
- Start small: Even 2 rakats is a great beginning
- Set an alarm: 30-45 minutes before Fajr
- Sleep early: After Isha is the Sunnah
- Be consistent: "The most beloved deeds to Allah are the most consistent, even if small." (Sahih al-Bukhari 6464)
- Make dua: The last third of the night is when duas are accepted
Conclusion
Tahajjud is a gift — a private conversation with Allah when the world sleeps. Start tonight, even with just 2 rakats. "Indeed, the night prayer is more effective and more suitable for recitation." (Quran 73:6)
